Technically, yes, you could convert an Epson printer to a Direct-to-Film (DTF) printer - but it is a complicated process that would require intelligent engineering and smart modifications. The process would involve modifying the printer to accommodate DTF inks and films, specific software, hardware adjustments and component changes, and specialized inks. Although some people try to modify off-the-shelf Epson printers for DTF printing, you should keep in mind that most printers are not designed for DTF printing and so are missing many features that are specific to DTF, such as (but not limited to) white ink circulation, white ink agitation, DTF film handling (feeding, pre-heating etc), Professional DTF Printers such as those sold by DTFPRO are either professionally modified or built from the ground up to feature all the necessary DTF functions. These include DTF roll feeding and/or sheet feeding features; external / larger ink tanks for DTF inks; vacuum-enhanced systems to keep the film from buckling / minimize print-head strikes; maintenance features to adjust printhead carriage heights for printhead-related cleanings and maintenance; WIMS (white ink management systems), white ink agitation / stirring systems, head cleaning functionality, bi-directional film controls; larger printable areas; advanced roller systems; DTF-focused damper systems for improved pressurized delivery of DTF ink; user-friendly controls needed for DTF printing and DTF maintenance functionality and more. These are just some of the features included with most DTFPRO printers. DTFPRO printers also come with RIP software (typically $500 to $1000 in value depending on the model), as well as training and on-boarding - everything you need to be successful at DTF.
