Roland S-PG and Roland S-PG2 are both genuine Roland DTF ink systems used for Direct-to-Film printing, but they are different ink generations and should not be confused or mixed. Roland S-PG is the original Roland DTF pigment ink system used with compatible Roland DTF printers such as the Roland BY-20 DTF Printer and Roland VersaSTUDIO BN-20D. Roland S-PG2 is Roland's newer Second Generation DTF ink system, designed for improved ink stability, white ink performance, reliability, and production efficiency.
The most important difference is compatibility. S-PG and S-PG2 inks cannot be mixed in the same printer. A Roland DTF printer must be configured for one ink generation at a time. If a printer is running S-PG inks, all installed cartridges must be S-PG. If a printer is running S-PG2 inks, all installed cartridges must be S-PG2. Mixing ink generations can cause printer errors, performance issues, and possible ink system problems.
For customers using the Roland BY-20, compatibility depends on the printer's current ink configuration. Some BY-20 printers use the original S-PG ink system, while other BY-20 printers may already be configured for S-PG2 or may have been converted from S-PG to S-PG2. If your BY-20 is currently running S-PG inks and you want to use S-PG2, a proper Roland S-PG2 conversion kit is required before installing S-PG2 cartridges.
The Roland BY2-20 uses S-PG2 inks only. The Roland TY-300 and Roland TY-300i also use Roland S-PG2 inks, typically in the larger 500ml cartridge format designed for production environments. Before ordering Roland DTF ink, always confirm your printer model, current ink generation, and cartridge size.
